Introduction
Your alarm rings.
You silence it.
Nine minutes later it rings again.
You press snooze once more.
For millions of people, this is how almost every morning begins.
The snooze button has long been treated as a symbol of poor discipline or unhealthy sleep habits. Productivity advice often recommends moving your alarm across the room, waking immediately or avoiding the snooze button altogether.
But when researchers began studying this behaviour directly, they found something unexpected.
Very little scientific research had actually investigated whether snoozing itself was harmful. Much of the advice surrounding the snooze button was based on assumptions rather than direct evidence.
Today, the evidence paints a more nuanced picture.
Snoozing Is More Common Than Most People Think
One of the largest studies on snoozing surveyed 1,732 adults about their waking habits.
The researchers found that habitual snoozing is widespread. People who regularly used the snooze button were more likely to:
- be younger
- have an evening chronotype ("night owls")
- report greater morning drowsiness
- sleep slightly less on average than non-snoozers
These findings suggest that snoozing is not an unusual behaviour—it is a common way many people manage difficult mornings.
Why Do People Hit Snooze?
Current research suggests that people rarely snooze simply because they enjoy sleeping for another nine minutes.
Instead, snoozing appears to be associated with several underlying factors.
1. Sleep Inertia
One of the strongest explanations is sleep inertia.
Sleep inertia refers to the temporary period after waking when the brain has not yet reached full alertness.
During this time people often experience:
- mental fog
- slower reaction times
- reduced attention
- a strong desire to return to sleep
Researchers have shown that cognitive performance is often poorest immediately after waking and improves progressively during the first few hours of the day.
For many people, the snooze button may simply reflect the experience of waking before this transition has completed.
2. Your Internal Clock May Be Misaligned
Not everyone is biologically programmed to wake at the same time.
People with later chronotypes naturally become sleepy later and often find early alarms more difficult.
The large survey of habitual snoozers found that later chronotypes were significantly more likely to use the snooze button.
In other words, your alarm may be working against your biology rather than your motivation.
3. You May Not Be Getting Enough Sleep
The same study also found that habitual snoozers tended to sleep slightly less than people who woke immediately.
While this does not prove that insufficient sleep causes snoozing, it supports the idea that sleep duration may contribute to the habit.
If your body still requires more sleep, the snooze button may simply be responding to that biological drive.
Is Hitting Snooze Actually Bad?
This is where the evidence becomes particularly interesting.
For years, conventional advice suggested that snoozing fragments sleep and inevitably makes mornings worse.
Direct scientific evidence, however, has been surprisingly limited.
In the first laboratory study specifically designed to investigate habitual snoozing, researchers invited 31 regular snoozers into a sleep laboratory.
Participants completed two different mornings:
- waking immediately with one alarm
- waking after approximately 30 minutes of snoozing
Researchers monitored:
- brain activity (polysomnography)
- cortisol awakening response
- cognitive performance
- sleepiness
- mood
- overnight sleep architecture
The results challenged several common assumptions.
Compared with waking immediately, snoozing:
- reduced total sleep by about six minutes
- did not substantially disrupt overnight sleep architecture
- did not produce clear negative effects on mood
- did not significantly worsen morning sleepiness
- did not significantly alter the cortisol awakening response
- slightly improved, or did not impair, immediate cognitive performance after waking
The researchers also observed that snoozing reduced the likelihood of being awakened directly from deep (slow-wave) sleep, which may help explain why some habitual snoozers feel more alert after a brief snooze period.
What These Findings Do—and Don't—Mean
It would be easy to conclude that the snooze button is beneficial.
The evidence does not support that conclusion.
The laboratory study was relatively small and included only people who already snoozed regularly.
It cannot tell us:
- whether non-snoozers would respond the same way
- whether years of habitual snoozing affect long-term health
- whether repeated snoozing influences chronic fatigue
- whether snoozing is helpful for everyone
Instead, the study suggests something more modest:
For people who already snooze regularly, a short period of snoozing may not be as disruptive as previously believed.
When the Snooze Button May Be a Signal
Rather than asking whether the snooze button itself is "good" or "bad", it may be more useful to ask what the behaviour is signalling.
Frequent snoozing may indicate:
- insufficient sleep
- delayed sleep timing
- persistent morning drowsiness
- sleep inertia
- poor sleep quality
- an underlying sleep disorder in some individuals
In this sense, the snooze button is less a cause than a clue.
How to Reduce the Need for Snoozing
If you find yourself pressing snooze every morning, current sleep science suggests focusing on the reasons behind the habit rather than the button itself.
Evidence-based approaches include:
- maintaining a consistent wake time
- allowing sufficient sleep opportunity
- increasing morning light exposure
- keeping bedtimes relatively consistent
- seeking medical assessment if excessive daytime sleepiness persists despite adequate sleep
These interventions address the biological factors that make waking difficult rather than relying solely on willpower.
Observatory Note
The snooze button has become a cultural symbol of poor discipline.
The science tells a more interesting story.
Researchers have spent decades studying sleep itself, but only recently have they begun examining the behaviour that occurs during the first few minutes after waking.
What they have found is not a simple verdict on the snooze button, but a reminder that waking is a biological transition—not a single moment.
Observatory Interpretation
People often ask:
"Should I stop hitting snooze?"
Current evidence suggests that may be the wrong question.
The more useful question is:
"Why does my body need the snooze button in the first place?"
For some people, the answer may be insufficient sleep.
For others, it may be sleep inertia, a later chronotype or poor sleep quality.
The snooze button is rarely the beginning of the story.
It is often the final signal that your transition from sleep to wakefulness is not yet complete.
